This happens because ultraviolet rays can break down the chemical bonds and thus fade the color(s) in an object - it is a bleaching effect

The sun emits light in many ranges. Ultra-violet light does most of the work, but some other ranges do something as well.
The reason things look coloured is because there are chemicals in them which absorb certain frequencies of light. The rest are reflected making it look coloured. The ultra violet light breaks down these chemicals, so no light is absorbed and it is all reflected. This makes it look white.

The rays of the sun interfere with the chemical composition of the color dies. In other words, the sun destroys colors and bleaches the material.
