Syrian, Golden hamster. Also known as teddy bear hamster sometimes just because the hair is longer and fluffier, that is a pet store given name. Black bear hamster, also a Syrian except the hair is obviously black....of all the varieties of hamsters the most tame and pet friendly would be this one. Dwarf hamsters alone have about 5 or so different variations.

A Roborovski hamster is supposedly the nicest and longest lived, however I have read that they can be jumpy and hard to hold on to, but they are dwarf hamsters (the smallest, in fact). If you want a large pleasant Syrian hamster (the common hamster), your best bet would be to locate a professional hamster breeder. They deliberately breed their hamsters for good temperament and size. An example of a well bred line of Syrian Hamsters would be the Black Bears. These hamsters were bred for the traits I mentioned above in Europe and specimens brought to the U.S. later, but petstore specimens may not be as good as the ones that were first imported.
