Any number of reasons...
infidelity, lousy sex, abuse, drugs, inability to manage finances or handle responsibility etc
Nowadays who really knows?
From one age level to another, the reasons for marriages breaking up might vary widely.
A young couple in their early 20's might break up over an infidelity, while another couple that has been married 20 or more years, may choose to remain married despite infidelity, for economic or personal reasons.
I personally believe that most people separate when they find that they no longer have the same common interests or goals that they once did. What most people fail to realize is that in the beginning of a marriage everything is new and wonderful. So that means you don't really have to work all that hard at maintaining the marriage. However, as time goes on nd a couple begin to know one another better, the same qualities that they once found so endearing, now become a source of irritation to them.
People tend to forget that just like our cars, marriage also requires maintenance and periodic work in order to be able to go the distance.

Selfishness. When two people are so caught up in meeting their own needs and making themselves feel happy that they are unwilling to sacrifice to make a marriage work. Usually people don't wake up and decide one day to seperate out of the blue. It comes slowly, and even in cases where infidelity is the apparent root cause, that can probably be traced back to an inability to love their spouse in a manner which puts their spouses needs above their own. (And i'm not condoning a destructive pattern which opens one person up to abuse by another.)

For me it was betrayal. My ex ran off with my kids by sending my stepson off to get him out of the house(he's grown and would have stopped her) She also abandoned HER grandmother, I took care of granny till she passed away. Ever since that time she has repeatedly violated the custody agreements and there is little I can do without having a big court fight that will put the kids in the middle. I have honor and she takes advantage of that fact.

Society. Marriage has become less sacred today. if a marriage is even a little stressful, everyone hollars, DIVORCE! There is no working at marriage. Society has made divorce so much acceptable. Easier to divorce than to work it out.

THE INABILITY TO TRUST AFTER THE OTHER SPOUSE HAS DONE SOMETHING TO HURT THE OTHER IN THE MARRIAGE AND THAT LEADS TO A LACK OF COMMUNICATION AND THEN ONE OR BOTH START TO FALL OUT OF LOVE AND THE PERSON THAT THEY LOVED SO MUCH IS THE PERSON THAT THEY NOW HATE

dishonesty and loss of communication, where at a point in time you feel that you are married to a complete stranger and wonder "what the hell are we two doing together?? we don't even know each other..".. this is a point where most marriages break
