Because war is a very profitable industry. War is always an attention getter. It sells in the media. WWII was practically the biggest war this country has ever had, and it makes sense to market a game that instills a sense of patriotism in the face of adversity in a time where we are always on the edge of war and are just waiting for the next country to show their @$$ so we can park a couple of aircraft carriers off their coast and let the pilots do what they were actually trained to do. You sell what is hot, and helping people arrange meetings with god seems to be all the rage right now.
