I want to remove a 20V under-counter hockey puck halogen light. Can I simply connect together the red and black wires (those that were used to mount the light) with a wire nut and tuck them back behind the dry wall and patch up the hole?

No, NO, nO . Now that the wire is there it always needs to be accessible. Cap them with wire nuts, in a J-box and an electrical cover. There are boxes (blue at home depot $3 ) that will clamp onto the dry wall and look like an original installation.

If you connect the two wires together you will have a short circuit. Wirenut the two wires separatly and tape the wirenuts onto the wires so the wirenuts don't come off.

StayBZ is right .Never ,ever bury electrical wires in a wall ;they must be contained in an accessible electrical box .
