It could damage a friendship, especially if one person fails to return the money later on, or wants his friend to write off the debt.
The friend will feel compelled not to pursue the matter if he wants to keep the friendship.
As a rule of the thumb, never lend money to a friend.

it depends on the friend u have. some may not expect the money to be returned while others will expect u to return.true friends will understand ur situation and will help u. they willl know when to get it back from u while the others willl definitely e xpect u to do so. so if u wana borrow money get it from ur best friends who knows more about u

Neither a borrower nor a lender be;

For loan oft loses both itself and friend,

And borrowing dulls the edge of husbandry.

This above all: to thine ownself be true,

it depends on the friend. some friends always lend money and never expect it back while others will hound you until you pay every cent.
