there are a number of reasons to this :

1> America has been independent for more than 200 hundred years while india has had independence for a mere 50 years.
therefore it is not right for us to compare america of today with india of today.

2> America from the very beginning has had true and genuine leaders who believed that service to the people was their only job.
ofcourse there were a few bad guys there as well. but in India the problem since independence is that we have a majority of bad guys(goondas/politicians) and very few dedicated leaders(hardly a handfull)

3> Democracy alone does not guarantee success . the keepers of democracy have to have faith in the system. this I fear has been lacking.

4> Corruption is an evil which is rampant in all departmemts of india . its not that corruption does not exist in america but it is less there.

5> absence of a leader with guts only copmpounds india's troubles. we are a leaderless country and the few members who do attend parliament (when the latter is not adjourned ) are absolute dacoits making india a kakistocracy rather than a democracy.

we have to realise that democracy alone is not self sufficient. a democratic nation also requires a genuine leader who thinks not about his own interests(in india it stands for vote-bank politics) but the overall interest of the country. india (as is the case with the world ) requires a leader who would be able to give a new direction to the people everywhere , who would be able to remove injustice from all parts of the country (and the world ) and who would not mind dying in order to support the truth . that is the need of the hour .

It could be a cultural thing. In America you can raise to whatever social level you want with hard work and dedication. In India there is still the belief you are born into your class and that's that, you could become a millionaire but it wouldn't change your class. Something as simple as a caste system could be whats clashing with the American ideal of democracy.
