As the gentleman and I traveled further and he mulled upon the tale of my wedding, he asked me the question I most dreaded in all the world. How did I meet Sir Lancelot de Lake and why did I betray Arthur? He had never met either man, but had heard tales about how I had immediately and callously betrayed Arthur with no regard for him. I told him that that was not entirely how it had happened and that I had never meant to betray my husband. This is what I told him.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Three years after Arthur and I married, the famed knight, Sir Lancelot de Lake, had made quite a name for himself with his daring deeds and his brave exploits. Lancelot was younger than Arthur, but Arthur favored him most of all his knights of the Round Table. Since Lancelot and I were of the same age and temperament and Arthur was often busy with state affairs, Arthur often had him escort me to various court functions at Camelot so that I would not be lonely. Lancelot and I quickly became friends and were often in each other's company.
I still remember the day that we met. He must have been about twenty and two years then and very handsome. He was so courteous when Arthur introduced us and his goodness and bravery was plain to see. He and I had an immediate affinity for each other and it was like we were kindred spirits in all thoughts and feelings. I became to him like a talisman in those early days and we quickly became linked together.
Lancelot's exploits are well known and he often honored me with them. In all the tournaments and jousts that he competed in, I gave him my favor and he honored me with victory on every occasion. He said that I brought him good luck and Arthur was well pleased with Lancelot's successes. Lancelot jousted against many great knights of the Round Table such as Sir Sagramour le Desirous, Ector de Maris, Sir Gawaine, and Sir Uwaine. He was able to defeat them all with little effort. When Lancelot met Sir Turquine while traveling and that knight challenged him, Lancelot slew him and then he went on to free the castle Tintagil from the giants. In each of these adventures, Lancelot said that his success was because of me and my belief in him.
After many years, our relationship changed, perhaps due to loneliness or dependence, into love. It was never my intention to fall in love with another, but Arthur was so devoted to his kingdom and to making it safe for all that I became lonely and Lancelot filled that void. I do not blame Arthur for what happened. In fact, I will always love him for being the brave and noble king that I married. We were unable to hide how close we were and it became a common rumor amongst the people throughout Britain that Lancelot and I were in love and that he would have no one other.
