I mean it doesn't really look like a mouse... does it stand for something? How did it come about?

well, i guess it kinda looks like one.

stout "body"

long "tail"

i dont know if it means anything or not

Because it's about the size of a mouse with the cord as it's tail (before cordless)

I think it looks a little like a mouse...about the same size...and the cable looks like a mouse tail...it's all about how mankind often gives the properties of life to inanimate objects. I mean, would you rather buy a piece of hardware called a mouse or one called a clickable control device? Mouse appeals to our sense of "cuteness" I guess is the way to put it.
