The term the computer uses is "wallpaper" to describe the background you see when you are not in a specific application, such as Yahoo! Answers. You can have a wallpaper of Yahoo! Answers, by the way; they call it "answer swag" and offer it up in a comment that appears on your Q&A page.
Almost any picture you like that you see on the Internet can become your wallpaper. But some of the most interesting ones are overall designs that are specifically set up for that. Just right-click on a picture or graphic design you like, and chances are one of the options will be "set as wallpaper." It's that simple.
Below I have included a link to the Scholastic Books site, in case you would like one or more of the Harry Potter wallpapers they have designed. But really; go anywhere.

There are many different wallpapers/backgrounds provided in Windows XP. To find them, right-click an empty area of the desktop. Click Properties and select the Desktop tab. Under Background, there is a list of wallpapers. To change yours, select a different one. Click Apply and then click OK.
You can search the Internet by using keyword 'wallpaper' or 'background'.
You can also add a picture from the Web. When you right-click a picture on the Internet, one of the choices is Set as Background. Or right-click it and click Save Picture As. Save it to your My Pictures folder. Again, right-click the desktop and click Properties (Or you can access desktop settings by depressing the Windows key + D. In the bare area of the desktop, right-click, and then click Properties). Select the Desktop tab. Next to the Background box, click Browse. Navigate to the My Pictures folder and click the picture. Click Open. That adds the picture to the Background list. Click the picture. Click Apply and then OK. This procedure also works if you want to add your own picture (remember that you can scan one of your own pictures).
