I can remember this like it was yesterday. When I was a very small child, some 50+ years ago, my grandmother scolded me for putting something on top of her Bible. I was very upset and asked why? just like any child would do. She realized that I did not mean any harm and explained to me that to cover over the Bible was to shade the Holy Spirit from the interior of the home which was like putting a candle underneath a bucket. The light of the truth could not bless the home.
Many years later I was curious about that and look into the superstition. What I found was not very convincing but worth mentioning here. When Bibles were translated and transcribed during the early 300 AD -1500AD the ink would not dry completely for several days. If something was placed on a newly transcribed set of pages the ink would adhear to the other pages and be transfered to the other page and would ruin the work. Even though this makes sense it would not apply today.
I can only conclude that it is some sort of tradition handed down from generation to generation.
Hope this helped.

This is certainly true of the Koran. I think it's also supposed to be on a high shelf if possible. I've never heard it said about the Bible. Could the person you're debating with have the two confused?

It's not stated in that way in the Bible. But in the Old Testament God (Jesus Christ) gave instruction how to handle the Tablets and all things that were in the Ark of the Covenant. All things that were to be used in sacrifices, the Ark itself, who could go into the Ark of the Covenant, their dress, the Tablets (Ten Commandments and writings of books of the Old Testament before Moses), were handled as God instructed or they did die immediately - usually - I mean their death was immediate! So no one can say what will happen if you put something on top of the Bible - maybe it will - or maybe it won't!
In Islam it is a definite practise that you do not put anything on top of the Koran! Muslims believe this completely!
When I was younger I always had a respect for the Bible - didn't know why - but I did. Then I started to practise Islam - and it was a command - then thru prayer, searching, and finding the answers for myself the Holy Spirit spoke - now I believe and have faith in Jesus Christ - for some reason things can be thrown everywhere in my home and nothing ever gets on top of the Bible!
God (Jesus Christ) is such a loving God - He does not want you to come to Him out of fear of Him - but love, revelation, understanding, and knowing it within your soul - not because you put something on top of the Bible! When it's time for you to have this relationship with God (Jesus Christ), you will know how to treat His Bible - there's no need to argue with anyone!

I was raised like that. Nothing was to be put on top of the bible. I guess total, absolute respect for the bible. I have since learned that God's word is alive and the bible could be burned and it wouldn't change one thing about God's word.
My family heritage is American Indian, wonder if that has anything to do with the practice?

Maybe it comes from someone who once burried their Bible so deeply they couldn't find it to read it? LOL
I think it's silly and superstitious to turn it into some sort of sin, after all it is a book to be used and worn out with daily page turnings. The best Bible to a Christian should be a well worn Bible as that means it's being put to use.

My mother used to say that all the time when I was growing up. I don't know why or where that idea comes from though. But I think it's kind of silly. From my understanding you're not suppose to buy or sell bibles either, but they are suppose to be given free. I think that is in the bible somewhere, but don't know where.
Superstition mostly I think.

Stupid idea! To avoid putting something on top of a Bible makes the Bible into an object of worship and that is a sin.

oh my gosh--I was just thinking that the other day--for real. I never lay anything on it and when I see that someone has at my home--I take it off. I can not remember anyone ever telling me to do so or ever seeing it in the bible though. I think it is just my personal thought and conviction to say that it is holy and I value it.
