As required by the environment the temperate (check your spelling) zone requires more insulation from the cold whereas the tropic zone being warmer does not. Additionally the food sources in the temperate zone supplies more fat content. The tropic zone higher temperature also burns fat more readily.

This is due to natural accomodation of living organisms at their environment. One of the uses of body fat is keeping the body warm, like a natural coat. Animals in tropic zones have to live in very high temperature conditions and therefore they don't need that much fat as those that live in lower temperature conditions. Consequently their organism will adapt to the environment by melting the fat in the case of animals living in high temperature areas, while preserving the fat in the case of animals living in colder areas.

Animals in a temperate zone need more fat in order to help them stay warm and regulate body temperature. Go to the arctic and you will see animals with many more layers of fat, especially if they are seagoing mammals. This insulates them from the bitter arctic winters and cold ocean waters.
