Why is it that I can connect to my wireless network but can't connect to the Internet?

Question

I used a netgear WG111T usb wifi adaptor to successfully connect to my wireless network and was able to connect to the Internet. I later used the same adapter on another network but have not succeeded since to connect to the Internet on my home network.

What is bugging me is that I succeed in connecting to the network but can't connect to the Internet. What I've noticed is that it is not able to automatically pick an IP address. When I manually type in an IP address it picks it but still wont give me access to the Internet.

Another observation is that when I type IPCONFIG/ALL at command prompt it displays the settings of the network I used but not my home settings. When I key in the IP settings manually I get my home settings but, like I said, I don't get access to the Internet.
I've tried it on different PCs but get same result. I tried cable and everything is fine.

I'm inclined to think the device has stored the settings of the second network but how do I get rid of that?

Go to Start --> Settings --> Control Panel --> Network Connections

Switch to classic view if you are not in classic view.

Right-click on, then delete, the connection you don't want.

Click the new network connection wizard in the upper left-hand corner.

Follow the instructions.

then ipconfig /renew

also has your wireless router got a firewall built in ? With the ipconfig - check out the ip address for the default gateway

Ensure that that your laptop is not set to use a Ethernet card, if it has one with an IP address in it then you need to select the obtain IP address from DHCP setting which should blank out any manual IP addresses you might have entered.

I have a (netgear) router and (ntl) cable modem. Im no expert but in my experience, if i connect my (ntl cable modem) to my ps2 (directly, asI cant figure out how to set up the netgear for ps2!!) its fine. Then i connect (ntl modem) to (netgear router) for computer use, No internet! I have to power down modem then power up, and its fine. It seems changing applications, or networks, stores temporary data in Modem. A modem reeboot (and/or router reboot) is necessary between applications. Try rebooting both netgear router, and, importantly, the cable/adsl modem by unplugging for 30 secs, or using a modem reset button if there is one, and/or netgear reset button. (you will need to reset up netgear, Wired though, as per first instal if you use the netgear re-set button, held for 30 secs but only using reset button needs this) Though you show network connection, this is correct. your pc is connected to a netgear "network" router after all. Its a modem/internet problem. the term network is confusing.

try Right-clicking on the Network Connection and choosing Repair.

This will release network settings, obtain new ones from DHCP, flush DNS cache, and flush ARP cache.
