Odds are it has nothing to do with your boss being a woman. How long has she been in a leadership position? How long has she been your boss? Does she have children? Or possible younger siblings? Answer these questions and you might see other reasons for her managerial apporach. As an example, my wife is constantly treating me like she treats her little brothers. I doubt, however, that she is trying to control me by doing this. I think it is merely the fact that she grew up taking her care of her little brothers and that is how she learned to be in charge. Perhaps your boss is in the same position.
If you have to work with her in the future, it might be worth bringing up to her. Maybe she is unaware of this tendancy. But be extremely polite and tactful about. Proceed with caution.

It's a personality type. Men do it, too. Insecurity and ego are about the best reasons for it I've been able to come up with. If she's new to leadership but basically a balanced person, it'll wear off. Depending on your rapport and your assessment of her, you may want to talk to her at an appropriate time. Be supportive but express yourself honestly. Then again, if she's really insecure, be patient and find another boss 'cause she' might be the hopelessly controlling kind. If so, you'll never really shine.
Don't blame the character on the gender. Good luck.

yes but as a woman I have often been talked down to by men as well. It goes both ways. Humans are humans.

Possibly. I think it is a subconscious one, though. IMHO, a lot of women are testing the men for their strength, to see if they will stand up to them or not. (Not all women, some.) Unfortunately, I have found myself doing this to my husband from time to time, but not intentionally.
Best wishes.

No, I think we only do that when we unconsciously perceive that someone wants to be treated like one. In your case though, I think she did that to let you feel that she was in a power position and to put you in your place. Power to her! Oops, sorry.
