If two parallel lines were extended forever they would never cross. The two lines of an equals sign = are parallel
Perpendiclar lines are lines that cross each other at 90 degrees. A + sign is an example of two perpendicular lines.

This is a simple way to remember: slope of a parallel lines is the same and the product of the slope of perpendicular lines is -1. Now what is slope? To find what that is you have to get a slope intercept form of the equation of the line which is: "y = m*x + c", where "m" is the slope and "c" is the intercept. For example, for the line you gave 7x - 3y = 8 we have: 7x - 3y = 8 => 3y = 7x - 8 => y = (7/3)x - (8/3). Now this resembles "y = m*x + c". Directly compare it to the values of m and c, we have slope to be 7/3. So the line parallel to this line will have slope 7/3 and the line perpendicular to it will have slope -3/7 (since 7/3 x -3/7 = -1). So the equation of the line that you want to find will be of the form y = (7/3)x + c. BUT, we are not done yet. We need to find c. "c" is the thing that distinguishes two different parallel lines. Now it is told to us that this line that we want to find passes through (4,-2). So these values should satisfy the equation: "y = (7/3)x + c". And this piece of information will help us find "c". Just plug in the values (x = 4 and y = -2) and we get: -2 = (7/3)*4 + c => c = -2 - 28/3 = -34/3. So your answer will be y = (7/3)x - 34/3 => 3y = 7x - 34 => 7x - 3y = 34 (THE ANSWER) The next part is just the same as this one except we have to find the line perpendicular to it. Now, for 4y - 2 = 3x => 4y = 3x + 2 => y = (3/4)x + (2/4) => y = (3/4)x + (1/2). So the slope of line perpendicular to it is -4/3. So the equation of that line: y = (-4/3)x + c Again we find c in the same way: 1 = (-4/3)6 + c => 1 = -8 + c => c = 9. So the equation is y = (-4/3)x + 9 => 3y = -4x + 27 => 4x + 3y = 27 There you go!......that's it I hope everything is clear now

Parallel lines will never intersect. They're like streets in a city that run side by side, and never touch each other.
Perpendicular lines cross each other at 90 degrees. They're like a street in a city vs an avenue in a city.

Sure. Let's start with the first problem: Write the equation of the line in slope-intercept form that that is parallel to the like 7x - 3y = 8 and passes through the point (4,-2). Well first off, we need to change the equation of the line given (7x-3y=8) into slope-intercept form. Slope-intercept form is y=mx+b, where m is the slope of the line, and b is the y-coordinate of the point where the line crosses the y-axis. So, first we should get the y-term alone. Therefore we subtract 7x from both sides: 7x-7x-3y=8-7x Simplify: -3y=8-7x -3y=-7x+8 Now, for convenience, I like to get the coefficient of the y-term to be a positive number. So, we therefore should multiply both sides by -1. This gives us: 3y=7x-8 Then dividing by three gets us: y=7/3 x -8/3 That is the slope-intercept form of the line given. So, we know now that the slope of the line given is 7/3. They want us to find the line in slope-intercept form that's parallel to it, for one. Well, parallel lines always have the same slope. Knowing this, we can write the equation of the line so far as: y = 7/3 x + b The other stipulation is that this line passes through the point (4,-2). Now, points are always written in the form (x,y), which means that 4 is the x-coordinate of this point and -2 is the y-coordinate of this point. Knowing that this equation will work for all points x and y, we can plug in 4 for x and -2 for y to solve for b: -2 = (7/3)(4) +b -2 = 28/3 + b -2-28/3=b Changing -28/3 into a mixed number, we get: -2- 9 1/3 = b -11 1/3 = b Changing -11 1/3 into an improper fraction gets us: b= -34/3 Therefore, for problem one, the answer is: y= 7/3 x - 34/3 Now for problem two: Write the equation of the line in slope-intercept for that is perpendicular to the line 4y - 2 = 3x and passes through the point (6,1). Again, first off it would be best to write the given line (4y-2=3x) in slope-intercept form. First we should add 2 to both sides to get: 4y = 3x+2 Dividing by 4 on both sides gets us: y = 3/4 x + 1/2 Now, they want us to find the line that is perpendicular to this one, for one. Now, the slope of a line that is perpendicular to another line is equal to the negative reciprocal of that line. What this means is you change the sign of the other line and you flip it. So in this case, the slope of this line would be -4/3: y = -4/3 x + b Now, the second stipulation is that this line passes through the point (6,1). We do what we did last time. We'd plug 6 in for x and 1 in for y in order to solve for b. 1 = (-4/3)(6) + b Multiplying we get: 1 = -24/3 + b Reducing the fraction: 1 = -8 + b b=9 Therefore, for problem two, the answer is: y = -4/3 x + 9 So, here are your answers: 1. y= 7/3 x - 34/3 2. y = -4/3 x + 9 There you go, I'm glad I could help. :)
