Because they collect in little piles under the sofa and reproduce like rabbits! I think its also because they're kind of fluffy looking like a bunny would be.
Really I'm not kidding!

"Dust Bunnies" is an old fashioned term for a collection of dust, hair, lint and other debris found under beds and couchs and such. They aren't really bunnies, but they can look fuzzy and resemble a little to medium sized fuzzy creature.

If you dust often underneath your furniture, you shouldn't find these dust bunnies.

Good luck to you and happy dusting!

Dust itself isn't called dust bunnies.

Dust bunnies are clumps of dust, hair and detritus that form (most commonly under the bed) that look like little fuzzy creatures.

We needed a cute name for them to make us feel better about having them - like it's cute to have pet dust bunnies, but not so cute to have bells of dust collected everywhere. I love my dust bunnies!

I agree with all the above answers. Also it gives a nice name to a household chore that cleaners dislike doing. Dusting under furniture!@
