My favorite myth of all time has to be the story of when Demeter goes to the underworld to get her daughter. At each level of hell Demeter has to give up something, clothes, jewelry, etc. In the end she is in the underworld naked and alone. But still she gets her daughter to come back.
Teaches us it is not what we have that matters, but who we are.

And the most beautiful goddess appeared from the foam of the ocean. The nearly full grown female child of Zeus, king of Gods. Her hair was spun from the golden rays of the sun; her skin milky white and as tender as a child's sigh.
The minute she set foot on Mt. Olympus, all the male Gods fell hopelessly in love with her for she was pure love itself. Of course, this made all of the goddesses quite jealous and they urged Zeus to marry her off right away as not to distract their own mates.
So he decreed that Aphrodite should select a husband, and all of the eligible--and a few ineligible--gods began to make their case before her. One by one, the gods boasted about their powers and prowess, their riches and kingdoms, in order to win over the beauty's heart.
Apollo, the god of the sky and sun, gloated over his influence over all the earth. Poseidon offered up all the treasures of the sea.
The last god in line quietly approached her celestial feet while everyone around watched in amusement. This was a lesser god. Tossed over a cliff at birth by his own mother, he had a body that was bent and lame. He had no dominions or kingdoms. He had no powers. Only a job which was to craft the powerful lightning bolts used by Zeus to strike down his foes.
The other gods scoffed at him, shocked that he had the audacity even to approach the wondrous Aphrodite. She politely asked him, as she had asked the others, "Why should I marry you? What is your power?"
In a quiet voice, he replied with only three words: "I work hard."
And with that, she lifted his chin with her delicate hands and kissed him on the lips. They were married that very day. And they loved each other very much.
Of course, with beauty and love as her divine mantle, she continued to attract male attention wherever she went, and sadly, she was not always faithful to her hard-working husband who found ways to inflict revenge upon her numerous, hapless suitors.
But that, my friend, is another story.
