When debating politics, people often make assumptions about what the government ought to do, and then only fight about how to do it. But what exactly is the proper set of activities with which governments should be concerned?

The proper role of government in society is to collect taxes, defend their citizens, try to provide a good economy, execute laws, support education, and uphold the words of the Bill of Rights and the Constitution.

I think the general idea was originally to make the country a nice, safe, happy, healthy place for its citizens, so they could fulfill their potential, and make beneficial contributions to society.

In order to achieve this, it is necessary to collect taxes, make and enforce laws, and keep a state-of-the-art militia. The government should provide schools, libraries, national parks. There are also social services that are needed for certain parts of the population, so the government must provide those, too. Of course, the government must also maintain all of their property, and provide highways.

Government means a setup to govern a country in law and order, others are progressively implemented.
Its easier said than done when everyone has his/her own opinion.
Opposing parties are quick to criticise every step thats not to their liking, but never praise the good that have been achieved.
Empty promises are the norm to gather votes.
Everyone claiming they can do a better job.
Lets leave out corruption, mismanagement, kickbacks etc, etc, etc

The government is here to protect the citizens from "rules" going awry - i.e. crime. What it SHOULDN'T be doing is determining how people should live their lives, such as banning gay marriage, etc.
