I and a lot of people always smile unless we feel threatened,. It seems automatic

Smile does not have a place or time. You smile when you see a baby try to stand up and walk, you smile when you look up at the sky and see the forming of the clouds.
Smile is you and its you to give.

If I know the person, yes! But sometimes you will meet strangers and when your vision meets, both of you just smile... I can't explain why, but it happens several times.

Yes, I always smile though sometimes it really puts me off when the other person just stares at me blankly. But smiling is the thing I do most in life. I just can't help it.

Yep, it's automatic unless I'm missing a tooth and happen to be self-conscious. Also, I prefer to check my smile after I eat so no food stuffs are painfully obvious to the "beholder."

it makes people happy, its cheap and giving out a smile, even if its unreturned, doesn't make one less dignified
