a terrarium or vivarium is a simulated environment usually in a glass tank or meshed cage...a terrarium or "wet habitat" is usually used for tropical lizards and amphibians,
a Vivarium or "dry habitat" is usually used for desert dwelling lizards or pets such as my Tarantula....a terrarium usually consists of an organic or artificial bottom such as topsoil or wood chips and has either real or fake plants in it....another thing a terrarium has is a source of standing or moving water......A Vivarium on the other hand is usually lined with some sort of sand or gravel, and has Rocks and dried logs simulating a desert environment also instead of a standing or moving water source there is a small dish w/ a water soaked sponge in it......I hope i adequately answered your question :)

A greenhouse that can fit on a table.

A Terrarium is a plastic container that holds soil and plants, planted in the soil. It is a sealed container so the water remains inside, and it is designed to grow warm weather plants from jungles or deserts. The idea is to put the terrarium in the window add a little water and watch the plants inside it grow. You can see the plants through the plastic. The sunlight makes the plants grow and heats the terrarium so it is warmer than it is in your house. Water evaporates and collects on the inside top of the terrarium and when it cools down, at night, the water falls onto the plants.

You can make a terrarium out of a 2-liter soda bottle. You need to use a clear colored bottle, empty bottle with the lid. Remove the wrapping and wash out the bottle until clean. Put in a 1" layer of gravel, on the bottom, then cover it with 3"-4" of topsoil. Add 4-5 seeds, like lima beans or something similar, and add enough water to make the soil damp. You may have to get a long stick to push the seeds into the soil. You should put in 4 air holes about the size of a pencil point in the sides of the bottle at the halfway point. Stand the bottle in a window where the sun shines brightly and screw the lid back on. After a while the seeds will take root and grow. The plants will be watered by the water you first put in, but you may have to add more water occasionally. After the plants are a few inches tall you will have to cut the bottle in half and replant them in a flowerpot.

It's a miniature garden in a aquarium or a large glass jar. the theory is it's a enclosed system that needs very little water. you have to constantly trim the plants or they will over grow the container. You can make one that uses tropical plants or one that uses desert plants. They can be quite fun trying to figure out the right landscape for your terrarium. I have made some where I used small models of houses and animals trying to make it look realistic.

a terrarium is an aquarium with 'land' instead of water. It can hose all kinds of animals but is usualy home to reptiles of some sort. Some terrariums are simple and have just a substrate like sand or newspaper in them. Others are more complex and have living plants and cage furniture like rocks and sticks. you can get directions on making one from books like 'reptile's for dummies" (no offense intended), or web sites like reptiles.com.
