Wow that's a rip-off. She should have at least given u minimum wage ($6.75/hr). Don't babysit for her ever again. Especially since the child is young and u had much responsibility, $17 is an insult. I think it's too late to do anything now. It will probably be too awkward. At least u learned a lesson. Don't babysit for them again unless they pay u a decent wage.

If you get pushy about the money, you probably won't be asked to baby-sit again. I pay $3-5 dollars an hour, dependant on the care I feel my child gets, whether the house has been kept clean, etc... But I also think many people don't know what to pay, are too embarrassed to ask and so they are paying what they "think" the going rate is. If the child was a handful, specify next time they call that you are establishing some set standards so that everyone knows what to expect. Then tell them your going rate, and maybe throw in a time that you need to be done so that the money isn't the only focus. If they question you about the "increase" in cost, simply say it's because you provide your own transportation and you don't really make any money at the lower rate because of gas prices.
On a side note: you might consider whether she could afford more and that maybe accepting less money was a little bit of a kind act of service to her. The other possibility is that she wanted a cheap night out. Likeliest of all is that she had a specific budget for the whole night and she paid you what she had left after a long night out...
I would never pay minimum wage. If people want that kind of money, they should get a real job. Realize that if you were working for minimum wage somewhere, they'd be taking out money for taxes and all that, so you might actually get to keep more baby-sitting for $5/hr.

I have a 2 1/2 year old, and I can say that you should have gotten paid more. I would say around the 30 dollar point. More or less depending on where you live. That ends up at basically 5 bucks per hour which for a 2 1/2 year old is pretty good. WIth a child less than 1, you can usually get more since they actually will require more attention. Just think of this as a lesson, and don't babysit for this family again unless you can agree on a price ahead of time.

You should at least be making 5 or 6 dollars an hour. Next time, before you commit to babysit for them, tell them that you have set prices and are charging x amount of dollars per hour. Paying you 17 dollars for 6hrs of your time was ridiculous - what cheap-o's.

That's a rip-off. Rates vary by location but should always be more than $2 per hour. What area do you live in? Urban or rural?
