If you want to use your laptop, you don't need to charge the battery - you can just plug it in into the wall socket. If you don't want to use the power cord to connect your laptop, you have to charge the battery. The battery light should be on your laptop, and is usually flashes as yellow to indicate that it not to full charge, so wait till it turn green before unpluging it from the wall. I mean you can do it earlier, but if the battery is not fully charged, it wont work that long.

Another thing, the battery will be chargin when your computer isplugged in and you are using it. If you want the battery to charge faster, just turn off the laptop and let the computer pluged in and keep your eye on the battery light.

Once you charge the battery, you can unplug the laptop, however my experience has been that those batteries don't hold the charge too long. Maybe for 2-3 hrs at most. It all depends on how much you use it and how big the battery is and how big the laptop is. If laptop is small, it wont be using that much energy and will run on battery power for a while, however I would carry the power cord with you, incase your battery runs out. You don't want to be stranded w/o your battery.

I hardly ever unplug my laptop from the wall. The battery charge does not hold that long. And on battery power it dimms my screen so its hard to see what I am doing.

So here is my experience.

Yes. The salesperson is right. If you fully charge the battery and then run it down all the way, that will maximize your battery life. In fact, you should probably do it a few times before you don't charge the battery all the way. Batteries that aren't charged this way can develop a "memory", which means that they won't allow themselves to get fully charged anymore, and that will shorten the battery life.

It is true. You must fully charge it before using and completely running it down about every two weeks will double the life of the battery.

Yes. You should also do that with cell phones. I don't know why, but it makes the battery last longer.
