I have medium gray carpet that has some stains that keep reappearing...was wondering how to dye the carpet and where to buy the dye...replacing the carpet is not an option at this time

You can dye carpeting.

If it is a natural fiber use the Rit powder dye in the box. If it is synthetic (which it most likely is) use the Rit liquid dye in the bottle.

You can mix dyes to get the color you want. If you have any scrap pieces of that carpeting practice on those first. If not start your dyeing on a non-obvious spot, if one exists. Realize, though, that the stains may still reappear only in the new darker shade you have just dyed it. But perhaps they will be less obvious.

Shampoo your carpeting first.

Two dying methods:

Sponge method:

Dipping the sponge (ordinary, rectangular, household sponge) in dye and press the sponge into the carpeting, working your way across the floor to end at the door.

Spray method ( Recommended. I think it is easier):

Use a sprayer like you would to spray bugs in the yard. Spray an area about three feet square then go back over it with a terrycloth towel scrubbing the color into the rug. Allow it to dry thoroughly in a well ventilated room.
Add fans to speed the process.

Keep in mind that the end color will not be the same as the wet project. A friend of mine and I dyed her sofa. She was in despair and hated the new color. I told her to wait until the next day (The sofa started out as a bileous lime green and looked like a liver color when we finished.) The next day it had dried into a lovely dark taupe shade we both loved.

Good luck!
And try getting the stains out one last time before setting out on the dying adventure.

I think that you could dye with ritz dye, you will find it at wal-mart but I would go with a darker color than what you have. I spilled bleach on my carpet and got a color close to the carpet color and that worked great, I just used a sponge, but if you are doing the whole carpet I would use a sprayer.I would first clean the carpet and let dry completely.

hi Jennifer, i think of the final element you're able to do is replace this broken component to carpet. it is going to likely be just about impossible to scrub the carpet, i will recommend this. decrease the broken section out of carpet with a pointy trimming knife or risk-free practices razor blade , to disclose the backing below. decrease adequate matching tufts to fill the hollow from a place the place it won't instruct. occasion. from below heavy furnishings, or interior a closet. Or in case you have a spare piece of matching carpet. Dab the backside of the hollow and the tufts with a desirable latex adhesive, then insert the tufts into the hollow . depart to dry, then trim if necessary and brush to mixture with pile. wish this facilitates you
