due to the long trailer length, the tractor (cab) has to pull into the intersection further than a normal vehicle. this is because the trailer axles are fixed, if someone could invent affordable turning axles, they could make sharp corners.

Because of the length of the overall vehicle and that the trailer doesn't follow the line of the tractor (front). When the front of the vehicle (the tractor) begins to make the right turn, the rear wheels of the trailer just nearly pivot , or rotate, to the right (clockwise) about themselves. If the tractor doesn't swing sufficiently wide, the tail end of the trailer will jump the curb or hit the obstruction of the turn. That is, the trailer rear wheels want to take the shortest distance to follow the tractor, thereby cutting the corner of a right turn.
Whereas the left turn is a larger arc and the trailer will more nearly follow the path of the tractor.

They take wide rights because if they made a sharp turn like cars can, they'd take out everything in their path. The trailer would cut across and would not turn with the cab.
Left turns aren't as sharp, so they don't need that wide of a turn.

yes, they do make wide left turns as well... they just have more room to do it in. think about when a vehicle makes a right turn... all the vehicle has room for is to hug the curb and when it makes a left turn it goes across an intersection thus giving it more room to turn.

I take it that this expression means that semis make a right turn from the left lane. So don't pull up beside it in the right hand lane if it's right turn signal is on.

well thats because most of the **** you dont want to hit is on the right side of the road (i.e. curbs , light poles , signs) and left turns arnt as bad cause you are moving across more lanes of traffic and it doesnt have to be as sharp as a right turn
