If you understand at 16 that it is better to own your own business than to have a job, you are way ahead of most others. A couple things that I can suggest are: In all business classes that you take, make sure that they teach you how to run your own instead of how to run someone else's business, and realize that the teacher is working for someone else and not necessarially running their own business. Secondly, and more importantly, start talking with people who do own their own businesses. Go to your local McDonalds, Burger King, Ice cream shop..... whatever. They are all businesses, and each one has an owner. Find out from the people who are actually doing it what they did, and do what they have done. Lastly, look at not only what they do, but how they live. If you don't want the kind of lifestyle that they have, you probably should not do what they do. It doesn't take much thought to realize that if you do what someone else does, you will get what they have. Best of luck. Let me know if I can help you in any other ways.

After spending quite a number of years in the business world, holding a bunch of jobs in various industries, and now teaching, I can honestly say that the best advice I can offer is this:

1) Learn all you can because education is truly key to success down the road,

2) Get some prior work experience before graduating because it improves your chances by showing you what the business world is like,

3) Take classes in a variety of business subjects like accounting, economics, finance, management, etc. These form the basis of any business and are a must for everyone.

4) Realize that you'll start at the bottom of the ladder, and might even be working for someone without an education, but you'll tend to rise further and faster with that education.

5) Watch and learn from others in the business because they've been there and done that.

I'm a Human Resources College Student and a former HR employee and this is awesome that you would like to go into business someday. Taking an accounting class is a very strong start and it sounds like you are doing the right things.

Some skills they do not teach in high school but are critical to success in the business world include
Being able to manage multiple projects at the same time
Integrity - make sure you follow through on what you say
Maintaining credibility - don't promise or state something that you are not willing to deliver
It's very important to be a team player and to get along with everyone
Always remain positive in the workplace - positive people tend to do better in business
Make sure you understand the company's goals and purpose and focus on those duties they suggest.
Be very organized

Also, more important than self esteem is self-efficacy. That is the ability to be effective. It's the part of you that when faced with a situation that some people would give up on says, no, I won't give up, I'm gonna overcome this situation. For instance, let's say you are a mom and your kid gets sick and you have an urgent deadline at work. You come up with a solution so you can still get the project accomplished and care for your child.

Finally, since you want to own a business someday, I'm gonna let you in on the secret for creating wealth. It's not the amount of money you earn, but the amount of money you don't spend and save. The more you learn to live below your income and put money away the more you will have later on when it's really important.

I sincerely wish you the best of luck. Stay focused on your goals and this WILL happen for you!
