On the outside wash it with a little dish soap or leather soap with water, rinse well, and use a lemon scented oil and rub in it well. On the inside -put a huge wad of fresh newspapers in and close it for a couple of days. It will be fresh!

Try using a Downy Dryer Sheet in there. That should absorb the odor of incense and leave your briefcase smelling fresh and new again.
Good luck and I hope it works!
This tip is also helpful for taking out the musty smells of a closet or dresser drawers too!

Maybe charcoal pads, like the kinds you put inside kitty litter boxes to absorb the smell.
Or how about whole coffee beans? I always see a bowl of them in oil shops. Don't know if thats to keep the air clean or just for sniffing though.
Baking soda box as a last resort (the kind with the peel away side and cloth barrier)
