I'll say I agree, and I love Buddy, but in the end there's no way to prove that one drummer is better than another, especially if they're not even around at the same time. What are you supposed to compare? How great they are at soloing? How much a general audience enjoys them? How great they are at sightreading? How versatile they are?

If you compare a lot of factors, than Buddy Rich probably can't necessarily be considered the best drummer ever. He basically only played jazz, he hated rock, doesn't sound very versatile. And as far as I know, he never learned how to read music, so he couldn't sight read. Unless he learned later on, his biography by Mel Torme never mentions this.

But, while most of this answer argues that Buddy Rich isn't necessarily the greatest drummer ever, my love for him allows me to just chill out and agree that Buddy Rich is indeed the greatest drummer ever.

So far.... but I used to think Chet Atkins was the greatest guitarist until I heard Hendrix. That changed when I heard Steven Vai and changed again when I heard Yngwie Malmsteen. The greatest drummer of all time could be putting together his first drum kit in his parents' garage right now.

Art Blakey, Max Roach or Phil Seaman. But if you did a poll & Buddy Rich came out on top I wouldn't complain.

I make it a 3 way tie between him, Ginger Baker and John Bonham.

Maybe in his (big band) genre. I think maybe Billy Cobham (of the Mahavishnu Orchestra) is technically better.
