Earlier today I noticed my gear shift cover was a little out of place. I thought it was just the leather cover that had come undone... I drove home fine (no problems shifting from reverse to drive, etc.) but when I put my car in park and tried to turn it off... it wouldn't turn off. The engine was off but the lights on my console and dashboard stayed on and I couldn't get my key out of the ignition. Luckily, my brother was able to play with the cover a little and eventually my car turned off... but this keeps happening. Does anyone know how to fix this problem? Should I try to take the cover off and put it back on? Any information would be GREATLY appreciated.

The car is a Pontiac Sunfire.

iwould say the most likely problem is the ignition, not the gear shift.when your bro played w/the cover he may have dislodged whatever was obstructing the inner mechanics of the ignition.there is a metal rod that runs from the ignition(inside the steering colum)down to a switch, which activates the electrical system and starter.when you turn your key,the rod moves down.when you turn your car off ,the rod should mave up,which shuts everything off.this is surely a job for a backyard mech.or repair shop.

one million)- If the laptop is reset there's a small era of time that it ought to act "unusual" even as it resets to the production unit parameters yet this frequently will bypass away in an extremely couple of minutes. it may were a sturdy theory to have the codes checked so that you're going to understand in the experience that they are mendacity. 2)- If it has a lock up converter then that feels like what's doing. At a preset p.c. the converter locks in and this may properly be felt like it ameliorations gears. A code examine will tell what codes are saved. it will be only a sensor difficulty or a significant one. 3)- stay to inform the tale good of them. you've a guaranty and also you do not favor them to play round with you and the inform you it really is out of assure.

The person who answered about the transmisson mounts has a good point to check out. It sounds like something has thrown your shifter cable out of adjustment, and this could wreak SERIOUS havoc on your transmission, as fluid could potentially be going through two sections of the valve body at the same time! If you question your abilities as a home mechanic at all, this is one to take in to the shop. Chances are it will be a very quick and simple adjustment, but it's nothing to let slide what-so-ever...

The problem may not be your gear shifter. If the steering is turned sometimes it locks up the key release. Try turning the steering wheel a little as you are turning the engine off.

The cover will need to be installed correctly, and any bolts, nuts, or screws beneath the cover that keeps the shifter in correct alignment will need to be secured. if this doesn't work, then there is ajustment on the transmission, best to be done at a shop. good luck.

I think you need to take it to the shop for a little check-up. If you try to do it yourself your car may become worse. Just go and get it fixed by a pro.
