It's not good for the baby. The baby cannot get enough oxygen if the mom lays on her back. LEFT side is better to sleep/lay on.

some of the people are right on here. Laying on your back will put pressure on your back and arteries that supply the uterus, so your baby too, of oxygen and nutrients. It can also give you a heck of a backache at this time!
I found if I put a pillow against my back as I lay on my side, it helped to keep me from rolling all the way over on my back and supported me better. You can also put a pillow between your legs (by your thighs) as you lay on your side because your hips start to separate some and you may find it more comfortable with this additional support.
Don't ever be afraid to give your doc or nurse a call if you are unsure of anything. That is what they are there for!
Good luck!

There is a main artery running down your back (inferior vena cava) which is the vein responsible for returning blood from the lower part of your body to your heart. The pressure from laying on your back can slow the blood flow down and cause the baby to get less oxygen, and then cause hypertension or low blood pressure.
It's okay if you wake up on your back, but a reason why you're waking up from sleeping on your back, is your body is signalling this wrong. Just when you are awake, try to go back to sleep on your left side with a pillow between your legs.
Sleeping on the left side is the best position for both you and the baby. It allows maximum blood flow and nutrients to the placenta but also enhances efficient kidney function which in turn helps out with swelling in your feet, hands, and ankles.
I also feel a little dizzy when lying on my back, not to mention babies can get heavy as the months progress, and does cause discomfort.

All of the above answers are correct, but the main reason is that it hurts! Once a woman reaches about 5 months, it is very uncomfortable for her to lay on her back. It may be do-able if she has a small pillow under the small of her back and a large pillow under her knees.

If you do lay on your back, you are putting pressure on the main arteries in the spine, thus preventing normal flow of oxygen and nutrients to the baby.

It hinders blood flow to the baby because the weight of the baby laying on them compresses them.

The weight of the baby puts too much pressure on the spine, or some jazz like that.

It's harder for the blood to flow from you to your baby.
