I used to have it on a Ktel album (vinyl) so many years ago. Can't find it on limewire and it was something my daughter and I always liked to sing along to because it kind of sounded nice. It goes sort of like this:

Little Man is Hungry....
Not 'til the book has all been read, follow the one you love instead of the road. He was me, he was you, maybe someone that you know, aint it cold enough to rain so let it rain.

Just like you, I could remember this song but couldn't recall the details. the good news is that I tracked it down, the hard part will be finding a copy!

The group was called The Bells, a Canadian band featuring Cliff Edwards. Bio: http://jam.canoe.ca/Music/Pop_Encyclopedia/E/Edwards_Cliff.html

The song is "He Was Me, He Was You" from 1973.

There is a Bells greatest hits album out with the song, but it seems to be available only in Canada.

Amazon Canada has it: http://www.amazon.ca/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0001HN608

I don't know if they will export, but if not maybe you can find a Canadian dealer who can help now that you have the details...

[ Oh, Amazon US sells it too! http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0001HN608 ]

Here are some lyrics I found on Usenet, I don't think they're completely right but they are close:

Little man was hungry
but they saw him as a tramp
with a love note in his pocket
but no money for a stamp
he just sits there in the doorway
and he sings his lonely song
mumbling the cold out of his hands
watching the shadows weave and dance
smiling but in his eyes
the shadows are gone

He was me, he was you
Maybe someone that you know
There goes everybody's brother
What's his name
Walk on by
In your mind
heartbreaks happen all the time
It ain't cold enough today
so let it rain

The painter he tried to paint it
and the poet he tries to see
I think he had a castle
? ? ?
He just stops to ask a question
can you tell me what you've learned
nobody knows the truth he said
not till the book has all been read
follow the one you love
instead of the road

(chorus)
