Read and study the instructions on any simple tarot card deck----Ryder-Waite--is a popular deck. Then ask a question, stick with a simple layout.Think about what the cards mean and what they maybe saying.Ask the question over and over again! Be sincere!!!Practice as much as possible, your natural intuition will eventually kick in.I play tarot cards when I am lonely or troubled and they always give me hope and new insight. It's better then watching television all night. You will learn something about yourself.Try it!

Develop psychic ability with tarot cards: when you are comfortable with relaxing and slowing your mind, a good way to develop psychic ability is to play with a set of tarot cards.
Find a deck with images you FEEL connected with. This means pictures you like and relate to in some way.

For instance I like the Hanson Roberts deck, the Robin Wood Tarot and the Connolly Tarot Deck. I don’t like the darker cards like Crowley’s Thoth Tarot, but each to their own. One of the most popular decks is the Rider-Waite Tarot.

There are two types of people, jsut like there aer two types of learner. One you can pick a deck up and just start reading these are the natural readers. Two -you get a deck and learn the meanings of each card, and after time you will be able to string and undertand a reading. Both are credible ways to read cards.

So to answer your question it can be either or and both.

Hope that helps.

I learned the basics from friends who had been using them for a while. the finer details are learned from practice and getting to know your deck. I use a regular deck of playing cards and they work equally well for me. You see because it is not the cards in which you truly "read"........ they are merely a distraction so you can "read" the person in whom you are doing a session for. trying to read the cards for yourself is a waste of time because because you already know all the information, and thus deceive yourself. People are harder to read sometimes because either they are good a masking their emotions or are truly skeptical therefore will be changing the mask they present to you
others are easy because they believe and are unwilling to be wrong will tell you all the answers that they believe to be true.

sorry kiddies it is all an Illusion just like David Blaine and his under water stunts

I read tarot, I believe a person must be open minded to even consider this; You do learn over time, I've been doing it 7 years now, and I've developed a bond with my cards, they whisper things to me.
Everyone has a different experience with the cards! ^_^

My mother in law does. It's takes learning if it doesn't come natural. Buy books it's something you can learn to do.

there are books that explain what each card means.
There are also 'beginners' cards with meanings written on them.

And you can also improvise to make it even more entertaining.
