I'd stick with the 60gb drive and get a good external USB drive to keep your data backed up. You have more to lose with a full 100gb drive if it were to go bad than with a 60gb drive. But then if the price difference by having a 100gb drive put in on the same make and model is rather small then by all means get it. Still plan on getting an external drive to keep your important stuff backed up.

I'd say purchase the laptop with 100GB of space and instead of an external hard drive buy a USB thumbdrive (say a 1GB or maybe2 GB) where you keep copies of your crucial info (papers, spreadsheets, NOT MUSIC) in case the laptop hard drive were ever to die.
If this really is for college and is going to become your regular usage machine and you need to watch your spending, I'd really say:
-Buy the 60GB hard drive and the 2GB USB thumbdrive AND with the money you save buy the longest warranty available for your laptop since college use always takes a toll on laptops (all those coffee shop visits and beer spills...you think I'm kidding?)

Well, laptops aren't cheap, but I go with the big hard drive. When you do pics & music, even 100G ain't that big. The external is a good idea too, but then you have an extra piece of hardware to carry.
Don't skimp on the processor speed either, otherwise you won't be happy.
Why don't you contact someone who already has a laptop they use for the web, music & pics. Maybe they already have the right answer.
Good Luck

I would rather buy a 100G internal hard drive. The cheapest way of storing all the extra stuff is to buy a bunch of DVDs and put all your music, movies, etc in them.
I bought a laptop and did quite a bit of research - contact me if you want some notes and where you can buy at the best prices.

Because music and other digital media (movies, etc.) are becoming more popular and more common, my best advice would be to get the bigger internal hard drive. And, when you get some extra cash, DEFINATELY buy an external hard drive, and back up your downloads/music/movies on your external hard drive just incase your internal drive crashes.
If you are experienced with computers, you can also partition your hard drive to make it seem as if you have two hard drives, and back up all your downloads on the second partition. If you would like more help on how to do that, you can contact me by visiting my website www.petesolano.com and I could glady help you with that procedure.

Dude for a laptop! you want to buy an HDD big enough to fit all your files! Like the OS and other programs! If you buy a small 40GB HDD and later upgrade to a 100GB HDD! You would lose all your licensed MS Windows Components! Laptops are harder to configure! but if you know how to do it! It would certainly save you big bucks!!
A External HDD is a good investment! Save all your music and movies etc. And carry that home when you want to upload your stuff from Desktop to Ext HDD! you can use it on both Laptop and Desktop! Make sure you get a 7200RPM HDD with USB 2.0 AND FIrewire!! both is better!! with a nice cooling fan! Ext HDD tent to get HOTTT!!

Go with the 100gb drive.
The whole point of a laptop is portability, and when you come to the point that you must connect an external hard drive you're losing a lot of that benefit so you might as well have a desktop. It's not fun to have to connect external hardware to your laptop while you're on-the-go.
