There is not answer for your question. You have to sell something people are looking for at that time. I will say, some of the best things are not too large and if possible an antique. Size matters (can't believe I'm saying that) because shipping cost can stop some people from buying. Antiques (the right things) bring in more money than small things people can get anywhere. It's like having a limited supply when dealing with antiques. But any time you start selling on ebay, it's better to start with a small supply on hand (of whatever) so you don't invest too much and lose a lot. If you don't sale some items, you won't lose much money that way.

Unless you personally have a "magical" source of a unique product that nobody else can make or buy, that you can get at an outrageously low price and that everyone on earth would give their firstborn to own, you will not make a "substantial amount of money" on ebay. It is an illusion. It won't happen.

Sell unique items. Common items are a dime a dozen. Specialize in one thing. Even sell things at cost and make money on the shipping fees. Hope you find your knack!
