My parents always went to bed fairly early. I just waited 'til they were asleep, opened the door, locked it, and walked out. That's all there was to it. As long as I was back by 3 or 4 am, they were none the wiser.

Yeah when everyone was asleep I snuck out a few times. I would tip toe out the front door.
As an adult I now know the high risk that I was taking, but as a teenager nothing seems more important than that party that everyone is talking about. Or the guy who you were praying about to have enough courage to ask you out but your parents don't think your old enough to date.
I've been there. I understand. I also know that every year is more dangerous than the last. I'm sure teenager's are still doing it and I don't recommend it, but if your going to sneak out, tell your best friend or older sis or favorite aunt or anyone who you feel you can trust, exactly who you are going out with, and their personal information. When a person does not mean you any harm they don't mind showing you their driver's license and copying the numbers down and giving the information to the person who you trust and know well. That's what I did every time even as I got older because people not just teenager's come up missing all the time. If they refuse to give the info then don't go out, too many people never never make it back home.

my bedroom was right above the garage. I would have the ladder proped up against the house. I would go out my window and down the ladder. Since I got up to go to school before my parents did I would put the ladder back.

Out the window to the roof of the "mud" room, to the tree with branches like a ladder all the way down to the ground.
