The most common current usage is to describe a product that is currently in testing, like a new piece of computer software. For example, if I created a program, I might first release a "beta" version to allow people to test it and find any flaws. After the "beta testing" phase, I would fix the flaws and release a final version of the program.

Beta is a phase of the testing process.
Alpha testing is done in house. For software, every time you compile and see if the code runs, that's alpha testing
Beta testing is usually done out of house. Once you've got stable code, you want to see what you missed, so you'll send it to a limited number of other people with different hardware configurations and level of skill so they can all test it and report any bugs you may have missed.
Gamma testing does exist, but mostly as a joke. Gamma testing is releasing software with bugs, then patching later, after it's on the shelf.

A pre-shipping release of hardware or software that has gone through alpha test. A beta version of software is supposed to be very close to the final product, but, in practice, it is more a way of getting users to test the software in the first place under real conditions. Given the complexity and ambiguous standards in the PC industry, it is impossible to duplicate the myriad of configurations that exist in the real world.

Its means "Testing". Just like whenever before thats a new software coming out. There will be a beta version, so that they test if theres any error in it. Have a nice day.

Beta is the second letter of the Greek alphabet. In computer terms, it's software that hasn't reached it's finally stage before commercial marketing.

software still in testing ...Like the latest version of IE is still beta, even though you can download it...I usually wait until the release ...Life's hard enough without my system crashing with this software.

It means
"WARNING: don't download this unstable piece of crud ! The engineers haven't figured it out yet and are hoping some users will reveal their stupid programming errors for them, instead of them figuring it out before the piece of crud is released on an unsuspecting public."
