Rainforests are very important as they are a part of the global weather system. Destroying all the rainforests will affect the water cycle, causing soil erosion, drought and flooding. During photosynthesis, trees take in carbon dioxide and give out oxygen. Thus, trees are also known as the lungs of the earth, purifying the air by removing carbon dioxide and providing oxygen.
Rainforests help to prevent the Greenhouse Effect. If there are no forests, the Earth's temperature will be very high. Hence, trees help to keep us cool under Singapore's tropical heat.
Rainforests are especially important to Singaporeans. Many people are living in urban towns with stressful lifestyles and the rainforests allow people to relax in the calm, green surrounding. Many people can be seen exercising or simply taking a leisure stroll to admire the plants and animals at our forest reserves. The trees also make Singapore an attractive Green City and Singapore aims to be a model Green City.
The rainforests in Singapore are 'living' educational museums of plant and animal species which we can learn about during our outdoor Science and Social Studies lessons.
Finally, some plants have extremely valuable medical properties. The only known cure for certain diseases come from certain species of trees found in the rainforests. Already half of the Earth's rainforests have already been destroyed, plants have or are becoming extinct even before they are discovered!.

We are losing Earth's greatest biological treasures just as we are beginning to appreciate their true value. Rainforests once covered 14% of the earth's land surface; now they cover a mere 6% and experts estimate that the last remaining rainforests could be consumed in less than 40 years.
One and one-half acres of rainforest are lost every second with tragic consequences for both developing and industrial countries.
Rainforests are being destroyed because the value of rainforest land is perceived as only the value of its timber by short-sighted governments, multi-national logging companies, and land owners.
Nearly half of the world's species of plants, animals and microorganisms will be destroyed or severely threatened over the next quarter century due to rainforest deforestation.
Experts estimates that we are losing 137 plant, animal and insect species every single day due to rainforest deforestation. That equates to 50,000 species a year. As the rainforest species disappear, so do many possible cures for life-threatening diseases. Currently, 121 prescription drugs sold worldwide come from plant-derived sources. While 25% of Western pharmaceuticals are derived from rainforest ingredients, less that 1% of these tropical trees and plants have been tested by scientists.

There are many reasons. Some of which are that destroying the forest (even more) can affect the concentrations of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the air, increase the frequency of floods, unconsolidate the soil which can lead to erosions and landslides, and reduce the diversity of animals which can further affect the earth in some way.
