They limit the number of questions and answers you can do until you prove you are trying to contribute and not just chat or be a smart-azz. That's why they have levels. I think the percentage of best answers should way heavier.

Yes.

Actually, the points add to the stickiness of the community by providing an element of competition. People have a competitive spirit, so by keeping track of their points in comparison to others, they feel a sense of satisfaction in contributing - beyond simply the fun they might otherwise have.

Points are also a way for people to measure their overall involvement against the involvement of others for the purpose of knowing how valuable they are in this experimental community. Someone with thousands of points will certainly feel more ownership than someone who has just a couple hundred.

This ownership is essentially equity that builds up over time so people are more likely to continue visiting the community and contributing. Points make all of this possible.

Finally, with higher point levels come more access and enhanced participation limits. So those who contribute more are rewarded over time with greater freedom and privilege.

It is too bad you can't trade in the points for cash, though. :)

You can trade them in for a NEW CAR!

Sadly, it's a Yugo.

More points give you more opportunities to answer more questions.

Sad to some, but yeah it gives a sense of accomplishment. Some of us don't have the option of living normal lives any more.

Points are just a way to keep score, they have no real value.
