I'm getting ready for dorm life, too. One thing I'm doing is instead of bringing a CD player, just putting all my music on Itunes and bringing my ipod. This way I don't risk getting my stereo stolen, and I can listen to my music whenever I want without bothering anybody. It's also good to have a cell phone because I think most dorm phones only have local.

A very large dictionary (Good for standing on, propping the door open and looking up big words); a Leatherman Tool (Good for opening beers, cutting wires, screwing bookshelves together and getting small things out of small places); a hot water boiler (not an really electric kettle, but one shaped like a pot)(Good for cooking Kraft Dinner, Jello, Ramen, and making tea or instant coffee)

not really for the dorm but if your always on the go .... if you have to use your car alot. at any truck stop you'll find a thing called a stove, it looks like a lunch box that you plug into your lighter cooks quick great for hotpockets frozen dinners and left overs.

ok, it is not for the bike, yet I actually LOVE my Gore Windstopper neck tube! Mine is made via Biker's decision, yet there are probable others obtainable. it is barely adequate on those slightly cooler days to dam the draft taking place my collar and save my neck heat with out being warm, and is unquestionably filled right into a pocket if it gets warmer.

I guess you could get a combination phone/fax machine; if you need to call someone or send a form quickly, you can do it from the dorm.
