Well, first and foremost, I'm a 22 year-old virgin, and so is my boyfriend. He will be visiting me in 2 weeks and we feel we're finally ready to take the plunge. I'm curious about birth control pills, my question is, now that I've started my menstrual cycle and taken the first pill (to interupt my cycle from the very beginning to protect me against pregnancy) from my 21 day pack of tablets, will I have to continue taking birth control pills even after my boyfriend leaves (he plans to visit for just 5 days... after that we won't be seeing each other, and thus having no sexual intercourse within the next 3-4 months since we're currently in a long distance relationship)?

I really hope I made sense, lol.
Thanks!

If your are in a Long distance relationship, and you are only seeing each other every 3 or 4 months, I think birth control pills are not the right choice, if you are not having sexual intercourse with anyone else. I would use condoms. If you use them the right way they give you the same protection than the pill with no side effects from the hormones. Wait until you are in a active sex life to take the pill.

Birth control can take upto 3 months to be 99% effective. Thus, you should plan on using more protective measures in the mean-time. Pulling out works well if you are experienced with it, but I can see that it's not the case for you. Try using condoms.

My doctors (multiple doctors from years of moving states and changing insurances) have always told me that it takes just one full month (30 days) of taking birth controls for them to be effective. So no ~ don't trust that the pills will work for you after just 21 days. I definitely encourage you to buys some condoms. After 15 years of sex experience, I recommend Life Styles Extra Sensitive without spermicide (if you're getting on pills, you won't necessarily need spermicide, but the main reason for avoiding spermicide is that it can cause infections like yeast infections in you). Life Styles have never ever broken on me. Anyway, suprise him by opening it up and rolling it over his dick yourself (many guys thinks it's totally sexy when girls have a condom AND take initiative to roll it on him too). Condoms will not only protect you from getting pregnant, the lubrication on it will prevent you from getting torn and swollen during the sex. Trust me... without lubrication, it happens.

Have fun!

It helps to take them consistently, so that your body will be regulated. Going on and off every few months can't be good for you-- the hormone fluctuations will be too intense.

In addition, by continuing to take them you will be in the habit of taking them consistently, which is key to their effectiveness. Ideally, it is best to take them at the same time every day to maintain a stable level of hormones in your body. I was not consistent and became pregnant while taking the pills, so I highly recommend making it a regular part of your daily routine for maximum effectiveness.

Besides, you never know when he might get a romantic notion and come up one weekend and surprise you! ;)

You should ask you gyno about it, but I would say yes!!! You don't know when you will ovulate and therefore you will not know if you are protected. If you miss just one pill, you could still get pregnant. Don't take any chances. I would take them untill you've had a normal period after he has left.

You should continue to take them. That way your body will be use to them. Otherwise you run the risk of mood swings if you keep going on and off them. Plus you can be sure you are protected.

I would because your cycle will be screwed up if you don't.
