So much as I am concerned, meterologists are a subset of atmospheric scientists. Weather forecasting involves atmospheric science also, but a forecaster is not limited to using science. I.e., as a forecaster you may feel something will occur (which is usually based on the abundant information you've learned but can't recall all of at the moment), but cannot explain why. The atmospheric scientist or meteorologist would always be able to explain why.

It is unfortunate to see so many people with an unfavorable opinion of weather forecasters, but blame the fact that the media (especially TV) is largely entertainment and an effective platform to display ads and you get many people who are good at attracting viewers (or got the position for some other reason) but do not understand the processes involving weather very well. Thus some simply read a forecast from another source (and because of the ad revenue, can be paid an awful lot to do that).

Weather forecasting is a field within meteorology. In reality, many meteorologists conduct research with no direct connection to weather forecasting. Atmospheric science seeks to explain atmospheric processes in general, including those related to weather, but lacks the operational focus of meteorology.

Given those choices, I would pick atmospheric science. I chose meteorology, though - interesting, but a little narrow in hindsight.

Looking back, I think pursuing a physics degree would have given me access to all of the above plus so many more interesting - and non-earthbound - phenomena. Fortunately, the knowledge is there for the taking - degree or no degree.

Weather forecaster. They are science wannabes who always have an excuse for not being right. Both of the others are scientists who try to find ways to better understand the weather variables. Weather forecasters (TV type) rely on them, but put a spin on the forecast to sell commercials.

I would rather be a weather forecaster because most of the time I'm right. Like if it's cloudy it's going to rain... No experience needed.
