Another idea could be that he is a failure in life and he feels earning points is some sort of accomplishment.

Perhaps, Joey is concerned about his point level so much because it is the only validation he gets from the world. Perhaps Joey has sublimated his ego in this manner because his so-called friends cannot relate to his needs. Perhaps those that are so concerned about Joey's interactions with the digerati are actually jealous that they command his attention when they cannot.
