i would also go with the X-Men because they outnumber the F.F. However, if you had to go with a 4 on 4, you'd have to be more specific of which four X-Men you'd pick to fight the FF. (If Jean Grey/Phoenix is paired with any three X-Men, then it's all over for the FF. If you don't have the Phoenix force for the X-Men, then maybe the FF would win because Johnny Storm/Human Torch apparently can go nova where he can reach the million+ degree farenheit that's found at the center of the sun, and melt just about anything on earth. And i don't think any of the X-Men can withstand that kind of heat, unless of course, you have Phoenix to protect you in an impenetrable telekinetic forceshield).
As a side note to the answerer below me: When i was reading comics as a kid, Marvel revealed how powerful Colossus was, and how powerful The Thing was, and believe me, Colossus would beat the Thing silly and take his lunch money too. Why? Colossus can benchpress/lift about 75 tons, while the Thing can bench/lift only 50 tons. Colossus can take more physical and energy damage with his natural metallic bodyarmor than the Thing can take with his natural rocky bodyarmor. ( i hope this settles the brute-strength brawl debate between these 2 physical powerhouses of these 2 teams).

Definitely the X-Men. B/c the X-men have more people with basically the same powers as the Fantastic 4.
But on the FF side of things, the human torch can heat up to supernova, ouch! The Thing might be able to overpower Colosuss but in the end, the X-Men have too many tools in the box.

Depends on which x-men. If the x-men have phoenix or Xavier then they would win easily. Otherwise it would be an interesting fight. Reed Richards is a wildcard because he can whip up some gadget that could render the x-men's powers useless. I would say without Xavier or Phoenix x-men might lose.

Reed Richards would take Professor Xavier aside and talk over the whole situation while the others were beating the snot out of each other, and then after they nearly killed each other, Reed and Charles would announce that they had resolved the misunderstanding, and that there was nothing to fight about.

almost an no longer achievable question to respond to. Why? Which X-adult males crew are we speaking about? obviously an X-adult males crew of typhoon, Phoenix/Jean, Wolverine Cyclops and Collosus might want to take the impressive 4 down. yet, would an X-adult males crew of Beast, Cyclops, Ice guy, Angel and Jean (no longer yet Phoenix) perfect the impressive 4? likely no longer.

i love the fantastic four, but they are no match for the x-men.
next time, ask if the x-men or avengers are a good fight match up instead.
you get capt america, quicksilver, thor, ant man, dr strange, iron man and a host of other heroes.
