I have a bet with a friend of mine. I think this new round of violence is a forerunner to the next world war. What do you think?

In my opinion, allies have to back allies up. It is unethical to stand aside and let a friend be slautered by militant islamists (Hezbollah) and i would want my allies coming to help in the event of an attack on my county (as Great Brittian and Canada (to name a few) did with the war on terror). Also, to clarify, the bet was with my girlfriend, so, for safety's sake, i hope she is right.

It depends on how carefully the rest of the world handles it. It could be an isolated war in the middle east, or everyone could try and get involved at once and it'd be a world war. We are Israel's ally in a sense, but that doesn't mean that just because they're going to have a war, we've got to have one two. However, our mere presence in the middle east, whether we're presently in the currently-involved countries or not, makes us wrapped up in the situation to some degree. As for the rest of the world, it's hard to know where they stand, but many of the leaders at G8 right now seem to side in favor of Israel. It's a very tricky business, and very scary, because weapons and warfare have evolved since the last two world wars. If you thought those were bad, try fighting a guerilla world war, which is what it will be if it evolves as such.

It was a stupid bet. If your right you won't live to collect it if he's right he will likely be alive to collect.

I think so . I think ww3 is a matter of weeks away. If nothing develops good or bad in the next month or so then it will all likely go away for now.

I am convinced whatever happens it will be quick. Party A did this and then party B did that and thats all it will take for it to sprial downwards.

I gotta believe that we are already in a world war. Men, women and children are being killed all over the world...by terrorists and those trying to stop them. Spain, Italy, the Middle East, Indonesia, many parts of Africa and, as we saw most recently India.

Are we headed for a full-scale in your face war? If you don't think we are already in a world war and you're looking for the type of wars we saw in WWI and WWII, I don't think we're headed there. I don't think anybody can stand up to the US (and its allies) in that type of war. It will be a different war altogether...much like the guerrilla/terrorist/special forces war that we're seeing now.

I think you won the bet...we're already in a world war.

Yes. The non-Islamic world is maybe waking up a little too late to the threat that Al-Qaida and Iran have been threatening all along. George Bush's (both of them) interest is how much their oil stocks will rise. I think nuclear bombs will start flying very soon.

Young people have no taste of World War. In modern wars you gain nothing. Due to globalization people are interested in their own prosperity. In old times some one ask a President of USA why not finish your enemies. He replied that he finished them by making them friends. Enmity breeds enmity. There will be no world war as war is between equal powers. Present state will not continue indefinitely. It will have repercussion.

I personally believe that all of this violence will eventually (and I stress eventually) lead to the next world war. Everything that is going on is definitely going to destroy the world AS WE know it, and set the world that our children are going to come in to. It will take time for the next world war to come, but this is all leading to it.
