High blood pressure can/will cause fluid retention, swelling in your feet and ankels is a sign, weight gain is too (water weight). Keep your feet elevated as much as you can....I don't know where you live but being in this damn hot weather also causes you to swell...see a doctor.

Generally they do not test for pregnancy on a pap. In fact, I don't think it's possible. Many people gain weight from the depo shot, but you've gained quite a bit. Have you taken a preg test yet? It's probably a smart thing to do, even just to rule it out. Diabetes and heart conditions, such as high blood pressure, can cause fluid retention and pooling of excess fluids, which in turn causes swelling. You may need a diuretic, like Lasix, to help you excreet the fluids in the form of urine. Also, keep your feet elevated above heart level as much as you can, and wear comfy shoes.

Sounds like you need to talk to your doctor.

Swelling can be a symptom of a lot of conditions, the least of which is pregnancy (because pregancy, while it might suck if it's unplanned, isn't a pathological condition). There are different kinds of swelling (is the skin tight and red or is it squishy and spongey?), how it came on, if it comes and goes, etc.

All are important details to note and bring to the attention of your doctor, soon.

Yes, birth control pills (BCPs) can raise your blood pressure.

Yes, BCPs can cause you to gain weight.

No, a pap smear is not a pregnancy test. Buy a good OTC one or have your doctor do one when you see her (which you should).

So go see your doctor and ask her all this stuff.

I want to add right now though that BCPs can increase chances of developing blood clots in your veins and arteries (that's a bad thing). One leg swelling up could be a symptom of that. I'm pasting more info on this below.

[1] Blood clots
BCPs can make women slightly more prone to form blood clots. A blood clot can occur in a vein or artery and can have different symptoms depending on where it forms. Clots can occur in the legs, abdomen, heart, lungs, eye, or brain. In the brain, a clot could manifest as a stroke. The risk of these events occurring is very low, but increases in women over 35, in smokers, and in those with high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, clotting tendency, or a family history of clotting abnormalities. The warning signs of a blood clot spell out the word ACHES:

* Abdominal pain
* Chest pain (also shortness of breath)
* Headaches (especially those that are new, severe, or associated with persistent dizziness, difficulty speaking, fainting, numbness or weakness in extremities
* Eye problems (blurred vision or loss of vision)
* Severe leg pain (and/or redness and swelling in the calf or thigh)

If you develop any of the ACHES side effects or jaundice (a yellowing of the eyes or skin) while on BCPs...contact a local health provider or go to a hospital emergency room.

I am going thru the same thing, I have been checked for everything, and I know I am not pregnant. My feet and ankles swell without fail if I wear any type of flip flop, sandal flat shoe etc during the summer to work or for an extended period of time. I would say it totally tied in to my job because I sit for a period of time, but I can wear tenny's and my feet/ankles don't swell.. that doesn't make any sense @ all to me. I've tried 100's of things to stop it. I found tho that if I stay away from salt til 1200 they don't swell as much. I walk during my lunch and I try to get up every hour to move around to help slow it.
I hope you find the answer because I know it is highly frustrating.

Considerations:
Painless swelling of the feet and ankles is a common problem, particularly in older people. It may affect both legs and may include the calves or even the thighs. Because of the effect of gravity, swelling is particularly noticeable in these locations.

Common Causes:
Foot, leg, and ankle swelling is common with the following situations:

Prolonged standing
Long airplane flights or automobile rides
Menstrual periods (for some women)
Pregnancy -- excessive swelling may be a sign of pre-eclampsia (a serious condition that includes high blood pressure and swelling; sometimes called toxemia)
Being overweight
Increased age
Injury or trauma to your ankle or foot
Swollen legs may be a sign of heart failure, kidney failure, or liver failure. In these conditions, there is too much fluid in your body.

Other conditions that can cause swelling to one or both legs include:

Blood clot
Leg infection
Venous insufficiency (when the veins in your legs are unable to adequately pump blood back to the heart)
Varicose veins
Burns including sunburn
Insect bite or sting
Starvation or malnutrition
Surgery to your leg or foot
Certain medications may also cause your legs to swell:

Hormones like estrogen (in birth control pills or hormone replacement therapy) and testosterone
A group of blood pressure lowering drugs called calcium channel blockers (such as nifedipine, amlodipine, diltiazem, felodipine, and verapamil)
Steroids
Antidepressants, including MAO inhibitors (such as phenelzine and tranylcypromine) and tricyclics (such as nortriptyline, desipramine, and amitriptyline)
