It could just be a preprogammed alert for regularly scheduled maintenance. Or it could mean you have no oil pressure and your engine is about to seize. I'm afraid you'll have to hit the dealer for an answer to this mystery. At any rate, don't drive around with the engine light on. It's bad karma.

I heard the Auto Zone can check it for free - there is a list of few hundreds possible codes in the service manual - you can not know what's wrong until the mechanic scan the enigne computer and get the code. Once you get the code you can do some research in the internet - or best way just visit the dealer - they now what to do. It could be something simple, but some problems if not taken care of sooner could cause more damage to the car.

All I did was replace the battery in my 2005 Mercedes Benz S430 and then the engine light came on and will not go off. Prior to replacing the battery, the engine light was not on. It has to have something to do with replacing the battery. There must be a way to reset it after changing the battery.

Are you serious? You have a Mercedes, but you haven't taken it to a mechanic to check it out?
Even AutoZone does free check engine light diagnosis.
Just take it in, they'll plug your car into they're little scanner and tell you the code. I personally would go straight to a dealer with that though.

Pomeroy...Karma is a lie from Satan. It is not real.
That being said...It most likely is something simple. Take it to your mechanic to get it checked out. I would warn you about how expensive it could be....but you already know it will cost alot...You drive a Benz! It always costs alot when you drive a Benz! Good luck!

it could be a numbitr of thing your best bet is to go get it diagnosed and the you should be able to determine what it is you need to do to correct the problem. Matter of fact you can go to Autozone and they can check it for you for free

Jeremy Dale and Jamie Hopkins asked them the same question. You should see the answers side by side.
