AS Ii SAID, I'M NOT A NUT. I JUST THOUGHT IT WOULD BE FU N TO FIRE/OWN ONE.I'M WILLING TO COMPLY WITH ANY AND ALL FEDERAL REGS INCLUDING REGISTRATION, ETC. I WOULD EVEN GIVE IT TO THE LOCAL COP SHOP FOR SAFE KEEPING UNTIL i WANTED TO SPEND A FEW HUNDRED $$$$ TO FIRE OFF A FEW CLIPS/MAGAZINES. If Uncle Sam wants to track me, fine...so be it. I have no nefarious motives other than to fire lots of rounds into a target filled sand bank in a few seconds. WHAT IN THE WORLD IS WRONG WITH THAT?

Only the semi-automatic versions are legal to sell to the public and is available in 22 and 45 caliber. Only a 20 shot straight clip is legal and the 30 shot straight or the barrel magazine are not legal. Some states require special permits for any guns that have clips that hold over 14 rounds. Go to you local gun dealer to try to source one or check in some of the gun magazines.

In order to legally own a Thompson you need a Class 3 dealer License. If you are really serious I would start asking federal agencies like the ATF how you obtain such a license. I'm sure it isn't just a matter of filling out a form though.

i dunno where'll you'll get one, but if'n u do, here's some details about it.

Due to the perceived popularity of the Thompson with gangsters in the 1920s and 1930s as well as their effectiveness in any hands (among other reasons), Congress passed the National Firearms Act in 1934. Among its provisions, all owners of any fully-automatic firearm (including the Thompson) must register them with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and agree to be subject to severe restrictions on the use, transfer and transport of the weapons, and all prospective buyers must likewise register with the government (registration also carries with it a $200 tax per item, per transfer). This includes submitting to fingerprinting and a thorough background check upon declaration of intent to purchase. Furthermore, after the purchase has been cleared (a process that normally takes at least four months), the owner is forbidden to move the gun out of his or her state of residence without notifying the ATF. The Thompson, as well as all other kinds of automatic weapons, are under a legal ban in at least nine states and the District of Columbia.

just to clarify, you do not need a license to own a machine gun, the laws that govern them are tax code, you have to pay a tax for one.
you will need to find a "class 3 dealer" in your state, they will have a form 4 from the ATF that you will need to fill out. you will then have to work with the dealer to find what you want (you will to know the make, model, and serial number for the paper work) then you will need to get your Chef Law Enforcement Officer to sign (typical the Chef of police, of county sheriff. there is a one time tax of $200 payed to the ATF, and is sent in with the form 4, a finger print card, and passport photos. then you will have to wait for the answer as to weather or not you have passed the background checks. after you get the approval you can go and pick your weapon up from the dealer.
if you need more information there are people at hk94.com who have been through the process.

if you are looking to fire one, and not to own one, check out Knob Creek machine gun shoot, or the Scottsdale gun club. both have machine guns to rent. you might also try calling around to local gun stores with ranges to see if any of them have machine guns to rent. my local range has a MP5 and a MP40 for rent.

They do sell legal semi-autos but to comply w/NFA laws they have an unsightly 16in. barrel. I see a few @ gunshows they sell for about 7-900 dollers. Try gunbroker.com they sell everything
