I am not a gun nut by any measurement. But, I have owned guns all of my life. I want to own a Thompson machine gun... a World War II variety would be fine. How can I go about finding and buying one? Thanks for the info.

just to clarify, you do not need a license to own a machine gun, the laws that govern them are tax code, you have to pay a tax for one.
you will need to find a "class 3 dealer" in your state, they will have a form 4 from the ATF that you will need to fill out. you will then have to work with the dealer to find what you want (you will to know the make, model, and serial number for the paper work) then you will need to get your Chef Law Enforcement Officer to sign (typical the Chef of police, of county sheriff. there is a one time tax of $200 payed to the ATF, and is sent in with the form 4, a finger print card, and passport photos. then you will have to wait for the answer as to weather or not you have passed the background checks. after you get the approval you can go and pick your weapon up from the dealer.
if you need more information there are people at hk94.com who have been through the process.

The last time anyone I know checked, there were three ways to own a Thompson legally:

Do the hanky panky with the government, and get a class III Federal Forearms license.

Be a law enforcement agency, and purchase the gun legally for use as a law enforcement weapon

Buy a Thompson that can't shoot. At all.

The Thompson is classed as a machine gun, and therefore requires a federal permit. Applications are available at any federal building. Consult any of a number of machine gun clubs around the country for additional information, including 'open to the public' shoots.

You can go one of two ways...

Auto Ordnance sells a semi automatic version of the Thompson, check out http://www.auto-ordnance.com/

or you can pay the ATF a fee of $500 for a special license to purchase a fully automatic Thompson, then go and find a WWII era Thompson. Check out GunsAmerica.com to see if someone has one for sale...

I like that drum barrel system. Reminds me of paintball.
OKay yeah you can buy one but due to federal laws it has to be a semi-automatic one... Yeah I know, the law blows.

Its your right as an american to buy one so the reason for owning it can be target shooting if they ask.

You need to talk to someone with a FFL (federal fire arms licsene) To order it for you, but go to the local supermarket and buy a newspapper looking type magazine called shot gun news.
ITs sold nation wide.
Find the model of gun that you like in the mag and take a ride to your local FFL guy's store(aka gun store duh) And tell him to order it.
OR You can order the kit + a reciever seperately also without an FFL and put it together your self. LOL
