I've been thinking about volunteering at a local animal shelter doing office type work. I wonder if anyone else out there did that, if they liked it, what they did, and if they liked the people working there. I would think they would all be caring people, but I used to think that of the hospital I work at, but it's so stressful there! I may be checking a shelter out in the near future, but I'm curious to other people's experiences. :)

Forget about the people...The shelter is for the animals. ( the four legged ones!)

I volunteered at a animal shelter working with the animals. There was a lot to do, walking dogs, cleaning cages, sweeping and just giving TLC to these animals. Spend time with the scared dogs and cats to help them trust and love people & to get used to human contact.
Donate stuff from your home and solicit your friends for items which the shelter needs. Blankets, towels, food, paper towels, toys, cat litter, dog & cat treats.
I still do this.
You will feel good about this at the end of the day!
I like it, if you like animals -you will too!

Well I have been a vet tech at a shelter for 6 years. It is a great job, it is a sucky job!!!!! Shelter work is stressful and hard. There is often bad outcomes and thankless people. There are a lot of people with major "issues" that are involved at shelters. People who would probably be collectors or worse if they didn't volunteer at a shelter. It is often like beating your head against a wall day after day. But someone has to do it for the animals. And often the reason people quit volunteering at the shelter has more to do with the other people than the issues with the animals. If you can stomach it, it is great.

if you love animals this is the best thing - if you hate animals go work at a pet shop where they are exploited for cash

yeah it was grand, i didnt do any office work, apart from helping people adopt animals. i played with em, showered em and walked em. the first day you go, you have to clean up SO much poop, but that's like the test to see if you'll come back, and i did, so i never had to do that again. its great and really rewarding...and also something to brag about. i've done volunteer work, wat have YOU done for society??? hehehehehe
