I have lived in a mobie home for 6 yrs, since my divorce. An apartment was not an option (too small, no washer/dryer on site, no yard for my son to play). I do not want any answers "b/c you are" that does not help me.

I am the one who left. My ex was caught cheating and refused to stop.

Jen,
It is the neighbors. My mother in law has lived in her mobile home for 35 years. It is the neighbors... and for all you others out there...
At least my home is paid for and to rent the land it sits on is $300... that is a lot better than $500 to $1000 for a place that traffic runs through, or has no yard, or is to small, or has not washer and dryer nearby or in the apartment...

Living where we do Jen, is what is necessary for the consequences. It will help you to save money and maybe move into a bigger better place when the time comes.

Trailer trash is common in some areas of the country, Arkansas in particular. The term "mobile home" suggests literally that... Someone living in their home which they move from park to park, state to state.

The correct term would be "manufactured home" if you don't want the trailer trash connotation.

Really what it comes down to is income level. The trailer park suggests a longer term decision to accept the trailer as a standard of living while an apartment is always considered a temporary option prior to buying a home.

While there are some nice manufactured home parks, many of them in the mid-west in particular are run down and full of uneducated hill billies like you see on Springer.

Hi Jen,

First off, I will let you know that I spent the first sixteen yrs of my life in the housing projects just south of Cincinnati. Needless to say, I'm not gonna pass judgment.

Who cares what people think. I have a rule that I live by... I actually gave this rule a vulgar title, but we won't go into that...
The rule states that everybodys opinions take the back seat to two people... The man who signs my check, and the woman I sleep with.... my wife!

I was actually in the process of buying a fleetwood double wide when my finances took a turn for the better.... I really wanted a house so I got me a starter.(8yrs ago)

What I'm trying to say is that there is not one person on this planet that is better than you because of where you live!
Keep your head high, demand respect!

add on: Have you seen the travel channel show on trailerparks? There was a trailer park on the beach somewhere with one and two million dollar trailers!

Trailer houses were known for having lower income people living in them. Used to, when you were poor, you'd be called Poor White Trash, now they just dropped part and added trailer. There is nothing wrong with living in one and there are some that are bigger than my first house. I'd much rather live in a trailer than an apartment too.

People only feel that way because many who do choose to live in mobile homes are in fact "trailer trash" that doesn't mean everyone is.

Not everyone can afford a $1,000 dollar a month apartment and a mobile home is an inexpensive option.

I live in a fema trailer because my former home got 9 feet of water and 6 inches of mud from hurricane Katrina. The government let me put the fema trailer in front of my moms home in the next city. Then my B***h of a Step grandmother had the nerve to ask my mom if she thinks the fema trailers looked "tacky" since they are everywhere, knowing we lived in her front yard and had lost everything. F*** that B****

If you keep it looking nice and have no trash sitting around,
people might think different. If you go to Florida, there are
thousands of mobile home courts that the "snowbirds" live
in all winter. I don't hear them called trailer trash.

Living in a trailer is half the requirement for being "trailer trash". You may not be trash, but that is the stereotype. Then again, there are rich people who live in mansions and act trashy... Perhaps they should be called "Mansion Trash."

Because MOST people are. It's starting to get alittle better though. With the cost of owning a new home, more people are getting trailers. It's more the neighborhood than anything.

It's just another undeserved prejudice, the same that clowns, carnival workers, lawyers, and quite a few others have to face. Counter the myth by living in a decidedly non-trashy way.
