i knew ppl who worked the hotlines and they were in their 20's or so, and they really wanted to help people get through a bad night with out doing something desperate and stupid. most really care about it, and some have been there. they know what seems like a dead end at midnight will look a lot better in the morning, and being alone isn't good when you feel like nothing matters. they don't ask questions. they try to let people know they are not alone in the world. if you are asking this maybe you need to not be alone either. things always get better no matter how awful it seems now.

Sounds like a goof question, but to stand up for the suicide hotline people, they are there to try to save lives. Some people think that's a pretty meaningful thing to do.

I don't think they are people with nothing to do, nor do I think they are all old. I sure wouldn't want to be a person that answered calls from people that were wanting to commit suicide. They probably ask a lot of questions to get folk to think about why they are wanting to commit suicide in hope that the person begins to think that it would be foolish for them to kill themselves.

they usually talk people through thier problems, keep them talking until they cant get help over to thier house or talk them out of it.

Old people are sometimes suicide counselors, but usually its just women who have felt the same before and now want to counsel others so they dont make the mistake of killing themselves.

They really do care, because they sit there for hours and most don't get paid.

Its probably a bunch of "older" people who think there is nothing better to do then help people... But usually people who call hotlines or see counslerswant attention...

Not even close. Counselors are all ages and extensively trained to deal with a myriad of life issues. Do they ask questions? Yes, to find out how to help a person with whatever issue they are dealing with. We were trained on how to talk with people who are depressed, suicidal, paranoid, delusional, and those in a panick attack. We were trained to help people with sexual dysfunctions, gender issues, and guilt over sexual orientation. Experts trained us on social service agencies that could help the homeless, runaways, abused women and men, molested children and adults, and those that were being physically or emotionally abused. We referred people to agencies when they needed housing, food, help with utilities, help with mental or emotional counseling on a longterm basis, and the location of a medical clinic or hospital if needed. We were trained on privacy issues, legal issues, and psychological issues.

People that work on these lines deal with a multitude of crisises in any given shift so they have to be ready for anything and everything. They are there to help you and me if we need it.

believe it or not people just sitting there with nothing better to do can actually talk someone out of suicide. sometimes depressed people just need someone to talk to that doesnt know them. it can actually help cause they cant judge you if they dont know you.
